…Tamrookum State School Landcare report 2023 Term 1…
This year we came back from our Christmas break to our veggie garden destroyed by birds and small animals. We had trying using Bird netting, although it was a big task every time we needed to access the garden as we would have to untangle the net to get. The Sustainable Warrior leaders concluded that we needed to build a cage around the two garden beds, we spoke to our School Chaplain and he helped us create an effective and practical design that would keep out animals and still allow us to work in the garden with ease. We took the design to our School Support Teacher and Principle to request approval to build to build the enclosure.
We approached Mitre10 with a list of materials we required to complete the given task. Once we had the materials we had our school Chaplain and groundsmen to cut and assemble the framing for the enclosure. After the had finished we were able to see our plan was coming together nicely. We then started on the large task of stapling the plastic trellis to the frame, this did take a while due to the intense summer heat causing us to have to take breaks. On one side of the gardens we have bird netting that will draping down so that we can access the garden easily for watering and harvesting.
In addition to building the enclosure we continued to plant seeds and water our fruit trees that we had planted in term 4 last year, we also bought chicken manure to mix into our soil to help fertilize future plants. We had a day where the preps came out to see our lovely garden and how it all runs.
